Snowshoeing in Breckenridge

  Don’t forget about snowshoeing!

Breckenridge has awesome snowshoeing trails - groomed and ungroomed, most with public access through national forest.

Recently my friend Maxine and I headed out to French Gulch, a great spot for snowshoeing on a warm, sunny day in January. The trail winds through trees and a beautiful, open meadow, with a mountain backdrop in all directions. We arrived at 10 am on a weekday, and had the place to ourselves, but a couple of hours later, a few more people (and their favorite four-legged friends) were enjoying the views, the sun and the exercise.

Don’t forget the sunscreen!
To access this trail, turn east on Highway 9 at the 7-Eleven Store (across highway from Breck Rec Center). Go about a half-mile, take the right fork in the road. Head down the road about another mile, and make a left turn at the stop sign. Now you’re on French Gulch Road – take it to the parking lot (about3-4 miles), get out your gear, and enjoy the mountain ambiance.
This is a great spot all year round – snowshoeing and x-country skiing in winter, hiking and biking in summer.
